The Research Committee of EMDR Africa promotes research on the use and effectiveness of EMDR therapy in African countries by African researchers, research institutes, and universities. To date, little is known about the cultural adaptations and effectiveness of the standard, group and specific EMDR protocols for the treatment of PTSD, depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions in African countries. Some of our EMDR Africa members have published cultural adaptations that they have made in the standard protocol, whilst others are involved in ongoing research studies. We have African PhD students studying the effectiveness of EMDR therapy affiliated with universities in West and East Africa. All research is conducted following the ethical and research guidelines of the respective African country the research is conducted in. Collaborations are developing with other research organisations within and outside of Africa. We encourage anyone interested in conducting research on EMDR in Africa to get in touch with EMDR Africa.
